Hermitage Farm

Our farm operates as a premiere, year-round full-service boarding facility, specializing in mare and foal care,
breeding, sale preparation, and rehabilitation services on some of the most fertile land in Kentucky.

Hermitage Farm is accepting new clients with broodmares, foals, yearlings and racehorses.

Boarding

The Key to Hermitage Farm? We put the horses first.

Experienced staff, veterinarians, and year-round nightwatch provide exemplary care daily for the horses. Combined with access to world-renowned surgeons, podiatrists, and consultants providing on-farm visitations, Hermitage Farm is the
preeminent place to raise Thoroughbred foals.

At no additional charge, horses receive the benefits of generations-long connections and networking, mating analysis, monthly communications, photograph updates, premium free choice hay, custom feed from Hallway Feeds – the only
family-owned and operated equine feed and supplement company dedicated to the horse industry, bi-annual soil testing, annual fertilization and seeding, on-farm production of grass stall bedding, and much more.

Breeding: Mare & Foal Care

From breeding mares to pre- and post-foaling care, our broodmares receive around-the-clock attention from Oldham
County-based veterinarians and have access to top equine medical center reproductive specialists. With strict post-
breeding and post-foaling protocol, and routine gestational exams, we do our best to ensure successful breeding seasons to come.

Hermitage Farm is happy to nominate your mare(s) to the Kentucky Breeders’ Incentive Fund (KBIF) each year, making
you as a breeder eligible to receive monetary awards resulting from the inutero foals’ racing career successes.

From Day 1, our expert staff gently and diligently handle foals, teaching ground manners, leading, standing, and more, to
create a good foundation for future connections of the horse. Within 24 hours of birth, each foal receives a liter of plasma
intravenously, protecting the foal from transferable diseases and infection such as Rhodococcus, Rotavirus, Salmonella
among others. Foal conformation is reviewed monthly by our farm manager and adjustments to feed, exercise, correction and schedule may be made to ensure the health and prosperity of the individual foal. Hermitage Farm does not charge board on any foal from birth until weaning.

Hermitage Farm is happy to register your foal with industry organizations such as the Jockey Club, Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund (KTDF) and Breeders’ Cup, making your horse(s) eligible for added purse money and
waived nomination fees to the world’s biggest races.

Sale Preparation & Consignments

In 1937, the first Hermitage-bred yearling sold at public auction. Since then, we have devoted our facilities, lush pastures, and extensive research to breeding, raising, and selling outstanding yearlings. As a result, in 1985, Hermitage Farm
raised and sold the World-Record High Priced Yearling – which still stands today – for $13.1 Million.

Hermitage Farm prepares yearlings, weanlings and broodmares for our own consignment and many other top consignors,
providing daily prep routines of hand-walking, walking machine conditioning, bathing and grooming, turn out as
prescribed, and more tailored services such as longe-lining, lunging, draw reins, etc.

Hermitage Farm’s primary sales focus is at Keeneland with both the September Yearling Sale and November Breeding
Stock Sale, but we maintain a presence at nearly all Kentucky Thoroughbred Auctions.

Layup Rehabilitation & Post-Operative Care

Due to our proximity to Churchill Downs, Keeneland, local training centers, and major equine medical centers in Central
Kentucky, we have long been a post-operative rehabilitation center and turnout facility for leading Kentucky trainers and
owners. More than 60% of our layups return to the winner’s circle following their time at Hermitage Farm.

Our spacious paddocks, grazing pens, round pens, well-ventilated stalls, and covered walking machines make our layups’ time at Hermitage Farm stressless in a quiet, tranquil setting, allowing them to truly relax and recover. Additional on-farm
services offered include PEMF Magnawave Treatment, Bemer Boot Therapy, and Laser Therapy.

Daily veterinary attendance and relationships with specialized doctors, surgeons, chiropractors, and podiatrists enable our
staff to maximize treatments needed by our layups to fully recover and benefit from their time spent here.

ABOUT US

A Working Thoroughbred Farm

In 1936, legendary horse breeder Warner Jones purchased Hermitage Farm and put into motion his dream of breeding
Kentucky Derby Winners, Oaks Winners, Breeders Cup Winners and more. Hermitage Farm continues to operate as a
Thoroughbred boarding facility and a post-operative recuperation center, among other services. We welcome owners in search of an accessible and controlled environment that allows their horses to flourish.
Visitors to Hermitage Farm can see the daily workings of a legendary thoroughbred operation. Schedule a tour to see

Farm Management

Brian Knippenberg

Brian Knippenberg / Farm Manager

Brian’s love for horses and Hermitage developed at an early age. A Columbus, Ohio native, he spent childhood summers
visiting family in Goshen–his uncle was Warner Jones’ Farm Manager for 30 years. In 1997, he came to work at
Hermitage for one summer and he’s been here ever since. He immersed himself in the operations and worked every job
on the farm to learn firsthand the inner workings of the industry. At the age of 28, he became one of the youngest farm

managers in Kentucky. In addition to overseeing the growing Thoroughbred operation, Brian is a licensed horse trainer
and trains young horses on the side.
